2015 Artegiro Artist in Residence Exhibition within the COCOAA Photofestival

Cinzia Naticchioni Rojas, Italo Mexican photographer, carried out a fascinating project for her 2015 Artegiro Artist Residency in Conzano ( Al, Italy) with title "Extra-ordinary Places". The body of work is amongst the installations included in Transluogo, the 2016 COCOAA contemporary art festival taking place in Conzano from May 14 to July 9.

Cinzia Naticchioni Rojas è un architetto e fotografa italo-messicana che vive tra Roma e Milano. 

  ''Il lavoro per la Residenza Artistica trae spunto dall'esperienza della percezione del territorio di Conzano e dei centri limitrofi, fatto di colline e paesi costruiti sulle cime. Il comune denominatore che unisce questi piccoli centri è proprio il paesaggio, con tratti che tornano alla vista ripetendosi e affascinando il visitatore.

Questo lavoro è centrato sull'identità di questi luoghi e sulla loro immagine: stampando in camera oscura su lastre trasparenti le immagini di questi luoghi e sovrapponendo le lastre, si ottiene una nuova immagine del paesaggio data dalla somma di singole immagini prese sul territorio. Questa nuova immagine sarà quindi una immagine inedita e differente da ciascuna di quelle che l'hanno generata. Sarà come se i singoli paesi formassero un unico luogo, con una unica identità data dalla somma delle singole. L'opera utilizza lastre trasparenti proprio per esaltare la caratteristica della gelatina ai sali d'argento: la trasparenza.

Mentre nelle tradizionali foto su carta lo sguardo non riesce ad andare oltre l'immagine, nei lavori delle trasparenze l'immagine è invece attraversabile dallo sguardo e anzi la si può guardare dalla parte retrostante. Si viene così a creare un nuovo punto di vista e si ha una nuova immagine (specchiata) che sulla carta (opaca) non poteva esistere. ''

Cinzia Naticchioni Rojas is an architect and photographer of italian mexican background living between Rome and Milan.

" The Residency's work draws inspiration from my perception of Conzano's territory with all its surroundings towns, a hilly region characterised by hilltop boroughs and centres, The common trait that joins all these small towns is indeed the landscape, with features that reoccur transfixing the viewer.

My work focuses on the identity of the place, on their image. Printing these images on trasparent sheets in the dark room, and overlapping the sheets, I obtain a new image of the landscape , result of the sum of all the individual images taken of the territory. The final new image will be therefore an original one, never seen before, but an image of those places, generated by each of those taken. It will be as the various towns form one place, one identity given by the sum of the individual ones. The work uses transparent sheets precisely to enhance the characterostic of the silver salts in gelatin: trasparency.

Whlst in traditional photos on paper the viewer's gaze cannot go beyond the image, in the trasparencies works, the image is pierceable by the gaze, being able to actually look at it from the back. This way it is possible to create a new point of view as well as a new mirrored image which on opaque paper could not exist."
