Un evento video art globale : due artisti australiani collegano Australia e Europa, tra Melbourne e Firenze.

Josephine Telfer e John Phillips collegano con il loro video-protesta globale, i due emisferi a Brac, Firenze, dalle 9 alle 21 di sabato 22.2.2014

Gli artisti australiani Josephine Telfer e John Phillips sono stati scelti per il programma di arte contemporanea della seconda edizione della White Night Melbourne, Australia con il video, Above the Sound of Many Voices, curato da Renata Summo-O’Connell (Artegiro Contemporary Art).

L’opera di Josephine Telfer, video artist, e John Phillips, compositore e musicista, èstata scelta da White Night Melbourne tra centinaia di proposte di artisti internazionali e verrá proiettata in continuo durante le dodici ore della Notte Bianca sulla volta di una piccola strada del distretto della city di Melbourne.

La natura dell’opera stessa ha ispirato la nozione di un collegamento tra Melbourne e Firenze. Above the sound of many voices infatti dá voce alla protesta dell'artista di fronte alla distruzione dell'ambiente per mano di imprenditori edili in particolare che puntano ad un immediato provento finanziario come nel recente caso di Taksim Square in Turchia.

Nell’opera, una luna solo apparentemente distante si riflette in un billabong mentre il suono disegnato da Phillips, riverbera in eco al silenzio della protesta di Taksim Square e di tutte le piazze del mondo.

Telfer ha inteso guardare verso l’alto per diventare parte di una protesta globale contro la distruzione del pianeta.

Artegiro Contemporary Art in quanto progetto curatoriale transnazionale e nomadico sviluppa e cura collaborazioni con artisti di varie regioni del mondo. Artegiro, che ha creato e curato con gli artisti l’istallazione di Melbourne, ha appena presentato due eventi all’interno della manifestazione Set Up 2014 a Bologna. Grazie alla collaborazione di Brac, si è reso possibilie il progetto di realizzare un mediawork globale usando l’internet come spazio nello spazio. Sará quindi possibile partecipare alla White Night Melbourne in diretta dale 12 alle 21 del sabato attraverso non solo due monitors ma anche la proiezione del video negli spazi di Brac.

Brac è una libreria dedicata alle arti contemporenee, uno spazio di pensiero votato all´azione, al consumo dell’arte e del cibo. Nata dall’esigenza di esprimere la più naturale funzione del vivere quotidiano: nutrirsi di informazioni e pietanze, di idee ed esperienze al fine di valorizzare la conoscenza e la sensibilità dell’arte, BRAC apre le proprie librerie e la propria cucina alla società del divenire per riconoscere, segnalare e non offendere i grandi valori che l´arte ha prodotto e continua a produrre.

Josephine Telfer è nata in South Australia, ed è un’artista visiva e video artist. Ha conseguito una PhD in ricerca interdisciplinare tra il Victorian College of the Arts and Music ela School of Behavioural Sciences dell’ University of Melbourne, Australia. La sua ricerca artistica e accademica è emersa dalla sua curiositá circa le trasformazioni del pensiero che hanno luogo quando si lavora creativamente e le connessioni tra Ie modalitá di pensiero dell’artista e il blocco creativo.

John Phillips ha lavorato per vari anni come compositore, sound designer, e produttore musicale per film, televisione, teatro e altri media, producendo un vasto repertorio di opera in Australia e nel mondo. Le sue opera comprendono colonne sonore per film, documentary e serie televisive così come istallazioni sonore e opere commissionate per orchestra. Membro fondatore del gruppo NOT DROWNING, WAVING, è stato produttore e ingengnere del suono di una lunga lista di progetti discografici per vari artisti australiani tuttora attivi in vari generi musicali come Christine Anu, Telek, Archie Roach, Yothu Yindi, e altri. Ha collaborato con Peter Gabriel al Real World Studios in UK / released on Real World records, e WOMAD festivals, Sing-Sing festivals a Hamer Hall & Sydney Opera House, e molti altri festivals.

Above the Sound of Many Voices is a video and sound installation created by Josephine Telfer who developed the concept and the video with John Phillips involved as composer of the music. Above the sound of many voices is the artists’ protest against the destruction of the planet by developers who think only of immediate financial gain.

Telfer intended looking upwards to become part of a global demonstration protesting against the destruction of the planet. Josephine’s wishes her videos to be a personal interpretation of her natural world. But, she says, that in doing so she creates another reality. For example in Above the sound of many voices, there was no moon reflected in the billabong in the moment she was filming and clouds did not move over the trees nor it was night time. Telfer had read a title concerning the Turkish uprise on the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: “Standing Man sparks a static social revolution as artist, Erdem Gunduz stands still in Taksim Square” . The still moments of reflection in her own video for Telfer echoed and related to the still artist in Taksim Square, Instanbul, Turkey, during recent demonstrations against the removal of trees in a park nearby. That time in Istanbul, others joined Gurduz and a forest of people became like a forest of trees. Above the noise of other demonstrators they chose to be still. They made a silent protest.

In this narrative of silence, John Phillips music produced sounds that endeavoured to give voices to the elements of the pond. Using an arrangement of abstract guitar textures, a distant trumpet was introduced to realise the sounds of the water, the wind, the branches and the leaves. The score for this project was for him like composing music for a performance, for a dance, where the leaves in the wind, and ripples on the water, are the performers in a ballet. The rhythm is their movement. The music just echoes their dance. John says: “As a sound becomes more compressed, resonances that normally sit hidden deep below the more familiar timbre are pushed closer to the surface. When this occurs, the resonances often divulge an almost musical tone. Frequencies become strange or simple melodies and chords.

The musical score for "Above" aims to echo these hidden resonances, and bring to life the ebb and flow of the wind, trees and water, so we can hear that it is not silence, but a symphony of subtle movement that hides within them, as the elements dance around each other, and sing their secret songs.”
